Shenaaz Janmohammed, along with a team from Pakistan and the UK are coordinating a fund to purchase a large number of tents both in Pakistan and abroad. These tents will be sent through different distribution channels to remote populations in the north that have not been as accessible to international aid.

Some details of arrangements (based on email correspondence):

Unilever will use its supply chain in the northern areas to deliver tents and strechers to some remote villages. They are suppporting a couple teams in villages and plan on setting up tent villages. A person just got back from one such village where people have absolutely no shelter.

Vendors are being sought in Pakistan. Supply is low but the following have been found:

  1. Pak Tent House, Buns Road, can supply 500 tents in a week, 100 per day, for Rs 3200, size is 18X15, each can fit 7 persons, and are waterproof
  2. Mr. Azhar Naeem, Road Trip. He can produce the panaflex tents for Rs. 3000 (large, family size)
  3. Three other contacts are shipping in tents from China and they are giving a good deal
  4. Jamal Ghaznavi at Arrivo Leather. Tel 92 (21) 4534467, 92 (21) 4387816
  5. A friend of mine is shipping in tents from Saudi Arabia tomorrow for 300 Saudi Riyals each, around a dozen. Someone needs to fund these (currently out of pocket of one individual) so please try to contact anyone potential donors in KSA.

Below is an email reproduced from Saman Qadri who is coordinating the distribution of tents from Karachi...

Dear Munazza,

okay, we can produce up to 30 tents in half a day, minimum, if all skins and labor is available. but we are having two major probs, of lack of skins, AND lack of labor.... theyve all gone to the affected areas. so basically univ and school volunteers are making them for free. they have now decided to work from 9pm to sehri... so bicharey are working really hard. before this they were woring 24/7, with only breaks for a few horus to sleep after sehri, return to work at 8 am, and a few hours for iftari....

i feel get tents from all avenues, dont pay attention so much to cost, pay attention to time of deilvery... we need them asap... lets get them from any way possible. lets do it from everywhere, the skin production continues regardless of shipment, its really quick, all we have to do is give skins and labor.

I dont know how effective it is to IMPORT used skins, because the cost of transportation is high for getting simply a recycled material, and also these skin-tents are temporary solutions as their life is very short, some even say only 2 months!!! A disappointing blow i got today... :(

So thats why we should get some good quality ones from abroad.
