Earthquake facts from the Embassy of Pakistan
The 8th October earthquake was the worst natural disaster ever experienced by Pakistan. Below is a fact sheet on general statistics related to the damage caused by the earthquake and the progress of relief work:
Devastation
- 1,000 confirmed dead, and 67,000 injured
- 3.3 million people (2 million in Azad Kashmir and 1.3 million in NWFP) rendered homeless
- $5 billion damage to infrastructure
- 20,000 sq. miles of area affected
- 8,000 schools destroyed
- 15,000 villages directly affected
- Most affected regions are Jehlum Valley and Neelum Valley
- $528.2 million is the total international assistance pledged
- 26,000 tents and 133,000 blankets have been distributed
- 235 airplanes with relief goods have landed in Islamabad since the earthquake
- 15 countries have sent rescue teams and 25 have sent medical teams
- A total of 35 countries have sent some form of assistance
- Medical teams from Germany, Sweden, Turkey, Hungary, Poland, Belgium, Greece, Canada, Russia, Afghanistan and Singapore are in Muzaffarabad. Teams from Malaysia are in Bagh, Jordan and China in Rawalkot, Italy in Manshera, Ukraine in Batgram, South Korea in Balakot, and Cuba in Rawalpindi.
- 50,000 Pakistani soldiers and thousands of other officers and volunteers are engaged in relief efforts
- 6 mobile army surgical teams are already operational in the area
- During the last nine days 45 helicopters have flown 1000 sorties over affected areas
- 188 public call offices have been set up, affectees allowed to make a free 3 minute calls to relatives
- Total of 2,220 tons of relief goods distributed up to date
- A further 1000 tons of relief good including medicines, 80,000 blankets, 3,000 tents have just arrived in the earthquake affected region
- 200,000 tents and 2 million blankets are still required
